Welcome Center & Museum

A new chapter in Stone Mountain’s story is taking shape inside one of the community’s most historic landmarks. The Stone Mountain Welcome Center & Museum, located in the historic Depot on Main Street, is preparing for a soft opening this fall, bringing visitor services and local history together under one roof.

The Depot itself is part of the story. For generations, the railroad helped connect Stone Mountain to Atlanta and communities beyond, supporting the growth of the Village, the granite industry, commerce and tourism. Today, the historic building is being given a new role as a place where residents and visitors can discover the people, places and events that shaped Stone Mountain.

The Welcome Center & Museum will feature changing exhibitions, historical interpretation and opportunities to experience the community beyond the museum walls. The first planned exhibition, Our Hometown: Telling Our Story, will use artifacts and stories to explore the people and places that have made Stone Mountain home. Future programming will continue to introduce visitors to different aspects of the community’s history and heritage.

Guided experiences are also being developed, including tours of the historic Depot and the Stone’s Throw walking tour through Stone Mountain Village. A docent and volunteer program will help welcome visitors, provide information and bring local history to life through tours and community programming.

The Welcome Center & Museum is a partnership between the City of Stone Mountain and the Stone Mountain Historical Society. As preparations continue, additional information regarding the soft opening, museum hours, exhibitions, tours and volunteer opportunities will be announced.
